What a Chainmail Short Glove Is and Where It Is Used

A chainmail short glove covers the hand to the wrist and stops there. It is the version most plants buy in volume, because most hand-knife work happens inside that footprint: boning, trimming, deboning, portion cutting, fish filleting, oyster and shellfish opening, and fabric or leather cutting with a straight or rotary blade. The glove is made from interlinked stainless steel rings, each closed individually, and finished with a strap that holds the wrist opening against the hand so the mesh cannot slide during a stroke.

Because it is short, it is also the lightest and most flexible form of chainmail. Operators accept it more readily than a long-cuff model, and it pairs with a separate arm guard or sleeve when the wrist and forearm need protection.

Wrist-Length Coverage: What It Protects and What It Leaves Open

The short glove protects the palm, the back of the hand and the fingers, which is where the majority of knife contact occurs in boning, trimming and filleting. What it leaves open is the wrist and the forearm.

In deep carcass work, where the blade is drawn toward the body and the wrist is frequently inside the cutting zone, a long-cuff glove or a separate chainmail arm guard is the correct specification. In bench trimming, portioning and oyster opening, the short glove is sufficient and considerably more comfortable across a full shift. This is the first question a buyer should answer, because it changes the item number, the price and the operator's willingness to wear the product at all.

Construction and Mesh Specification

The table lists the construction values that should appear in any specification for a food-industry chainmail short glove. Values left open in the purchase order become a different product on the second delivery.

Parameter

Specification

Effect on use

Ring inner diameter

2.75 mm

Dense mesh for puncture resistance and finger dexterity

Ring outer diameter

3.81 mm

Defines mesh thickness and contact area

Wire diameter

0.53 mm

Balance of weight, flexibility and ring strength

Ring closure

Riveted or welded

Riveted resists opening under stress; welded is smoother and easier to clean

Material

AISI 304 or 316 stainless steel

316 for brine, blood, salt water and chloride washdown

Coverage

Hand to wrist

Maximum dexterity, pairs with a separate arm guard

Fit

Ambidextrous, reversible

Half the SKU count, simpler stores issue

Strap Options Compared

The strap is the part that fails first in service, so it deserves its own line in the specification rather than being treated as an accessory.

Strap type

How it works

Best for

Textile strap

Woven band with buckle, comfortable against the skin

Dry cutting rooms and general handling

Plastic strap

Moulded strap with press-button buckle, non-absorbent

Food areas with frequent washdown and hygiene audits

Metal hook

Steel hook and loop closed at the wrist

Fast donning and doffing on high-throughput lines

Spring strap

Self-adjusting stainless tension spring

Consistent tension across a shift; quick size change

Sizing Chart and the Fit Check

Size is set by palm perimeter and palm length. The chart below is the standard range, and colour coding keeps sizes visible in the changing room, the wash basket and the stores.

A correct fit leaves the mesh flat across the palm, the fingertips snug but not compressed, and the strap tight enough that the glove does not rotate when the wrist flexes. Evaluate at least one size on the line before releasing a volume order: a plant's large is not always a supplier's large, and a size mismatch is the most common reason a first shipment is rejected.

Ambidextrous Wear and Left/Right Handling

Short chainmail gloves are normally ambidextrous. The glove is turned inside out to switch hands, which halves the SKU count, simplifies stores issue and lowers the cost of holding spare stock across a plant.

The practical rules are simple: turn the glove inside out only when it is clean and dry, check the strap orientation after turning, and never force a repaired glove onto the opposite hand until the repair has been inspected. Train the rule once at induction and post it at the wash station, because a glove turned inside out while wet is a glove that fails early.

Cut Protection Performance and Standards

ISO 13999-1 covers chainmail gloves used with hand knives: design, penetration resistance, ergonomic characteristics, straps, weight, marking and test methods. EN 1082-1 is the European scope cited in most CE declarations for this product class, EN 388 reports mechanical risk performance, and EN ISO 13997 expresses cut resistance as the force required to cut the sample with a blade under load.

Food-contact compliance is a separate question and should be evidenced by LFGB or FDA-related documentation, not by a general statement about stainless steel. A short glove supported by these documents is a control measure that a hygiene auditor will accept; a glove without them is an unverified claim in a safety file.

Cleaning, Colour Coding and Food-Contact Control

Stainless steel retains no fluid and the open mesh dries quickly, which is why chainmail short gloves survive industrial washing that would degrade a textile glove. Wash with a mild alkaline detergent, rinse at the temperature your hygiene standard requires, dry fully before storage, and avoid acid-based cleaners that pit the passive layer of the steel.

Colour-coded straps do more than identify size. They allow zone control - one colour set for raw preparation, another for ready-to-eat areas - so that a glove cannot quietly migrate from a raw line to a cooked-product bench. Check the strap and the mesh at every wash, and retire any glove with an open ring immediately.

Ordering, Packaging, Repairs and Lead Times

A purchase order for chainmail short gloves should state the item reference, the size range and the quantity per size, the strap type, the steel grade, the marking or label, the packaging configuration, and the documentation set that must accompany the shipment.

Standard export packing is one glove per poly bag, boxed with the tensioner and the instruction sheet, and cartons configured to the order. Agree carton counts, labelling and the HS code at the quotation stage, and add a spare-ring or repair-kit line to the first order so that the fleet can be maintained from day one instead of waiting for a replacement shipment.
